THE FOREST BELONGS TO EVERYONE

The Kayan Mentarang area (Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia) is one of Indonesia's largest (1.6 million hectares) and biologically richest protected areas.

Parts of the reserve are the traditional homelands of several ethnic groups, who are sensitive to their natural environment and have extensive knowledge of the forest resources.
The main conservation problems for the area are caused by conflicting interests of different groups involved in using the protected area: logging, forest clearance for commercial farming, protection of biodiversity, conflicts over park boundaries and extraction of valuable forest products by outsiders.
The project intends to help the forestry authorities and local communities to set up a management system for the reserve, which includes the creation of various management and buffer zones.
